Selah cross country teams find new gear late in the season

Senior Shea Mattson nearly won the Class 2A boys state championship on Nov. 9, while sophomore teammate Cooper Quigley placed sixth overall, helping the Vikings take ninth in the team standings.

selah cross country_1Mattson missed winning the individual championship, losing to his rival from Pullman by just six-tenths of a second, finishing the 5K course in 15:24. Quigley wasn’t far behind in 15:48.

Senior Jackson Yates was next in 104th place (17:25), followed by senior Jon Watkins (136th, 17:51), freshman Eric Swedin (138th, 17:52) and sophomores Jonathan Orozco (152nd, 18:16) and Sam Anderson (157th, 18:30).

The Vikings placed third out of 12 teams at the Nov. 2 district meet. Official times are available here.

The Selah girls also finished the season on a high note, taking fifth place at state behind a seventh-place performance by senior Nicole DeHerrera. Coming off a broken leg she suffered just last spring, DeHerrera crossed the line in 18:55.

The Vikings also were helped in the team standings by the performances of senior Charis Williams, who took 43rd in a time of 20:27, junior Aryanna Gonzalez (61st, 20:51), senior Kaleigh Dalrymple (67th, 20:58) and freshman Jenna Bond (90th, 21:42).

Freshman Kieryann Mattson (11th, 22:07) and senior Makayla Sauve (116th, 22:17) rounded out the varsity results at state.
